8th Grade Art @ Penn's Grove...
is an optional, elective course, taken every day for one marking period. Students choose their electives for the following year in May.
Art in the 8th grade is designed to examine the origins of the basic art forms as they as they relate to history and world cultures. The lessons taught are as folliows:
Mask Research Assignment: Students will be given worksheet to complete in class on Wednesday, 4/13/16 Students may re-submit this assignment for a better grade up to 3 times with no penalty. The highest score will be the only one on the grade book. Each time the student submits this worksheet, I will provide specific comments for the student to address to get a better grade.

Paper Mache Mask influenced by one or more components from previous written assignment. Paper mache is applied to a foil impression of students' face. After mache dries, students will pull out foil, cut the mask and/or negative spaces and plan for the painted design. After painting, students may add anything they choose to mask. Students will give very short presentation of mask, telling what masking culture they researched, the 2 ways they applied this research and what this tells of the culture. Students will need to answer the essential question for the unit, which is: How does art relate to history and culture? It's a loaded question. Students must verbally articulate the answer so that it's complete, correct and makes sense. The students and I will coach each student as they craft the best answer. This part of the unit requires the student to assimilate everything they're learned from their research and the shared research from the other students in class and think this question through. This task is challenging but the results are rewarding!Clay Construction: Form With Function challenges students to design and build a functional ceramic piece, disguised as an unlikely form. This complex piece must be engineered to work effectively and utilize at least 2 methods of clay construction in the building of the piece. Design drawn up and dissected to ensure this "blue print" for the piece is accurate. This plan shows the order made and method used for each part of the whole. Ceramic piece will be fired and glazed. When these pieces are returned to students, they will dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. The glazes used contain no harmful chemicals and are food-safe. Please enjoy using these functional pieces with confidence! :) R/L Brain Drawing is a series of drawing exercises, designed to provide a basic understanding of how the human brain works when drawing. These exercises are based on Dr. Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Will be working on a few drawing exercises that "force" the left side of the brain into "submission'. Students will be practicing drawing what they see, as opposed to drawing what they know!
